HUMAN IMPACTS SYLLABUS

OVERVIEW: Human Impacts is a fast growing fascinating and controversial science. Our human impacts class will be student led to explore topics that students want to know more about or are already very interested in. Each unit will be designed by students. Groups of students will choose 2 topics to research, understand, present and debate for each quarter of the semester. The students will get a chance to explore literature,research articles, clips, documentaries and presentations related to their topic to gain an understanding of their topic. Following the research phase the students will move to the presenting stage where they have a class period to present their topic and try to give their classmates a similar understanding to the topic. The final phase will be a debate that is set up like a traditional speech/debate class where there will be assigned teams for for use and against use. The unit will end with a discussion over who the class thought won the debate and come up with follow up questions to write a short reflection paper on the unit.
RESEARCH PHASE (all groups will have 2 full weeks at the beginning of the quarter to complete their 1st topic)
-find literature and research articles to use as sources for the presentation
-find a documentary or movie about the topic to show to the class (can be multiple short clips if not a full video is found)
-movie follows presentation and lead students should prepare to discuss the movie as it relates to their topic
-find forums, blogs or social media to come up with ideas to enhance your debate (what are people thinking about your topic0
-cite all sources using MLA format
PRESENTATION PHASE
-presentation (main component is powerpoint presentation)
-additional resources (posters, handouts, whiteboard notes or short video clips)
-presentation must last 45 minutes (it will go over the entire scope of your topic)
-what it is
-how it works
-who developed it
-when was it developed
-why it was developed
-is it currently in practice
-cost of creation, cost of using
-results
-gains or contributions to society
-cost of negative implications to society
DOCUMENTARY/MOVIE CLIP PHASE
-must be directly related to topic
-must be previewed by Mrs. Alderson before showing class and approved
-must include a hand out to be filled out during movie/documentary/clip
-must lead a follow up discussion on the movie with classmates
-write a reflection to end
DEBATE PHASE
-2 groups (the original group members must split so that one is for and one is against)
- First Speaker for Affirmative
(3 minutes to introduce topic, key words and outline upcoming points)
-First Speaker for Opposition
(3 minutes to introduce topic, key words and outline upcoming points)
-Second Speaker for Affirmative
(4 minutes to discuss in detail 2-3 of their main pro’s or contributions to society)
(2 minutes or rebuttal from the opposition key points)
-Second Speaker for Opposition
( 4 minutes to discuss in detail 2-3 of the main con’s or cost to society)
(2 minutes of rebuttal from 2nd speakers affirmative pro’s)
-Third Speaker for Affirmative
(3 minutes to introduce 1-2 new pro or contribution to society)
(2 minutes of rebuttal from 2nd speakers opposition con’s)
-Third Speaker for Opposition
(3 minutes to introduce 1-2 new con or contribution to society)
(2 minute of rebuttal from third speaker affirmative pro’s0
7 minutes recess to prepare for final argumentations
(during this time review what needs to be strongly reinforced or strongly rebutted to try and win your case end strong)
Any chosen speaker from Affirmative makes closing argument (5 minutes)
Any chosen speaker from Opposition makes closing argument (5 minutes)
Debates will be graded on rubric
-flow of speaking
- eye contact, memorization, enunciation, proper volume, proper speed
-knowledge of topic
-wise use of time
-strong moving pro’s or con’s
-ability to rebut the discussed pro’s and con’s
-resources used
( following debate etiquette guideline, if you don’t have proper etiquette you lose points)
